How do I explain the world in all its diversity to a child? That there are mountains and lakes, but also desert? That no two people are the same, and that we all have the same needs.

Oliver Jeffers makes the world comprehensible to his son with a few precisely chosen words and impressive pictures. Because ultimately our continued existence is our responsibility. "Take good care of the earth, for it is the only one we have."

Mint & Malve's Tip:

Do you really get how this works on Earth? What life is all about? Exactly! How should a newborn baby feel then? Oliver Jeffers helps with his touching picture book "Here we are". Find out what this has to do with World Children's Day and a "love letter to my child" in this blog post.

At the beginning of this book review, Stefan from vaterfreuden.de asked me if I wanted to be part of the blogparade #LiebesbriefanmeinKind. For this blogparade, various mom and dad bloggers post their "love letter to my child" or a blogpost on the topic until World Children's Day on September 20. You are also cordially invited. You can find out how at the end of the post.

For the keyword "love letter to my child" I immediately thought of THE love letter to a child ever: The new picture book "Here We Are" by Oliver Jeffers. After all, what could be more valuable than making the start in life easier for your child, answering his or her questions, explaining the world to him or her, at least to some extent, and assuring him or her of our love and support for his or her journey through life? Exactly. And that's why I would like to introduce the children's book to you here.

Where have I landed?
"Here We Are. A Guide to Life on Earth" was written by children's author and illustrator Oliver Jeffers (born in Northern Ireland, now living in Brooklin) in the first two months after his son Harland was born. He begins by explaining to his son where he has ended up - on planet Earth, part of our solar system - and that his parents are very happy that he has found them at all in the infinitely vast universe.

Quite diverse!
Then he explains how the Earth is made up - of land and sea - and what cavorts in these habitats. Of course, we humans - pretty complex creatures that need to eat and drink all the time. People who are quite colorful, tall or short, fat or thin, and behave differently. But in the end we are all: human beings. We share the earth with the animals - also a pretty colorful bunch.

Discovering and protecting the world
After this first layout, it's about human coexistence, about the daily and nightly routine. Many newborns don't seem to understand this very well at the beginning. (Editor's note: I can only confirm this from my own experience ;-)) And finally, Oliver Jeffers gives his son some touching advice and the assurance that he will always be there for him.

Conclusion
Oliver Jeffers gives with "Here we are" not only his newborn son, but all readers and their children a kind of instruction manual for the earth. He moves from the big to the small and back to the big again, calling on us to appreciate diversity, to treat our fellow human beings and animals well, and to take care of our earth. He hits the quiet notes, but always with a special wit. He touches with questions about the meaning of life and by conveying security and safety. The basis for discovering the world as a little person. "Here we are" is not only a declaration of love to his son, but also to the earth and its inhabitants in all their diversity. All this makes this picture book the ideal gift for birth.
