Safety first: Why bike helmets matter for children

Whether on a balance bike, their first bicycle or a scooter, children should learn early to wear a helmet. Falls happen faster than you think, and a properly fitted helmet protects the vulnerable head from serious injury. Even toddlers in a trailer or on a child seat benefit from a helmet. As a role model you should also wear a helmet yourself – showing your child that safety is second nature makes cycling even more fun.

Finding the right size and fit

A helmet can only protect if it fits properly. Measure your child’s head and choose the correct size – common helmets range from XS for 44–49 cm up to M for 52–58 cm. Practical dial adjusters at the back and soft padding help customise the fit. The straps should run past the ears and close under the chin without pinching. Our helmet & bike accessory section offers a wide range of sizes and colours.

Materials, certifications and extras

Quality children’s helmets use lightweight EPS foam with a tough polycarbonate shell. Look for the European EN 1078 safety label – it guarantees the helmet meets strict standards. Extras such as reflectors or integrated LED lights improve visibility on the road. Many models have seven to nine ventilation openings with insect mesh to keep little heads cool on hot days. Pair the helmet with child‑friendly sunglasses or a ski helmet & goggles for year‑round adventures.

Style, trends and combinations

Helmets don’t have to be boring! Bright colours, reflective patterns or favourite motifs ensure your child enjoys wearing theirs. Animal and comic designs are particularly popular, and you can personalise a helmet with stickers. A matching bike and a lightweight jacket complete the look. In winter a thin beanie fits under the helmet, while in summer a light sun shield is enough.

Care and everyday tips

Check the helmet regularly for cracks or damage and replace it after a fall. Clean the shell with a damp cloth and let it air dry. Store the helmet in a dry place so it keeps its shape. Avoid second‑hand helmets because you don’t know their history. And remember: a helmet is just as important on scooters, skates and balance bikes – making safety a habit for life.
