A warm companion: why a good scarf is indispensable

A scarf not only protects against the cold but also makes a fashion statement. In autumn and winter it keeps your neck and shoulders warm; in spring a light neckerchief can replace a jacket. Well‑chosen scarves add a finishing touch to any outfit and can be tied or draped to suit the occasion. They are a versatile accessory that belongs in every wardrobe.

Cotton, wool and polyester compared

Cotton scarves feel smooth and are ideal for mild temperatures. They are easy to care for and can be washed without fuss. Wool is biodegradable, long‑lasting and wonderfully warm; fine merino wool doesn’t itch and is suitable for sensitive skin. Polyester may be low maintenance and quick‑drying, but as a non‑renewable material it is less sustainable. Natural fibres are the better choice.

Cashmere and merino – luxury for the neck

Cashmere comes from cashmere goats and is renowned for its extraordinary softness and lightness. It insulates superbly, absorbs moisture and keeps you warm even in cold conditions. Merino wool comes from merino sheep; it is fine, elastic and non‑itchy. Both fibres are breathable and can be produced with animal welfare in mind. Look for certifications like GOTS or the Responsible Wool Standard to ensure sustainable production.

Style, combinations and occasions

From solid colours to bold patterns, the range of scarves and shawls is vast. Classic tones like grey, navy or burgundy work well for everyday wear. A colourful scarf adds variety and can elevate a simple look. Pair your scarf with a beanie, matching gloves and a jacket. On cool evenings, knitted scarves are particularly cosy, while silk scarves provide elegant protection in summer. A high‑quality scarf also makes a thoughtful gift for any occasion.

Care and sustainability

Care depends on the material. Cotton can be machine‑washed and dries quickly. Wool scarves should only be washed when necessary and by hand with a mild detergent; lay them flat to dry. Cashmere also requires hand washing in cold water and must not be wrung out. Store your scarves folded in a dry place and look for sustainable labels to enjoy your accessories for years to come.
