Meret and Gian are playing. Suddenly there is a fight over a stick of glucose. So the brave knight Gian takes Meret on an exciting journey inside his armor. There they meet lots of princes, hard-working servants, an important blacksmith and even a super-fast astronaut. Meret is amazed at what Gian has going on and understands why he really needs the glucose.

Key experience:
When our 5-year-old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus, we were faced with the challenge of how to explain this condition to his friends in a way that was understandable and exciting for young children. My idea of wrapping this clinical picture in a knight's tale was very well received and, much to my delight, stuck. A key event based on my story, which I was able to experience on my son's first school trip, prompted me to take the plunge and create this very picture book.

The challenge:
The main challenge for us was to illustrate complex processes and their interrelationships in the body in a simple and exciting way. To ensure the content and accuracy of this picture book, as well as the content of the accompanying medical brochure, we were also able to count on the cooperation of Dr. Paolo Tonella, FMH Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology, Lucerne Children's Hospital.
