Selecting children’s sneakers

Choosing the right sneakers is crucial for healthy feet. Experts recommend soles that are flexible enough to bend to 90° and twist easily so the foot can move naturally. The footbed should be flat and made from soft, breathable materials like leather or cotton. Plastic materials make feet sweat and are therefore unsuitable.

Fit and growth

A well‑fitting sneaker leaves 12–17 mm of space in front of the toes so the foot can grow. Use a paper template to determine the correct size and have your child try shoes on in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger. Laces or Velcro should hold the shoe firmly without pinching. At home, children can continue to walk barefoot or in slippers to strengthen foot muscles.

Materials and variants

Natural materials like leather, linen or cotton canvas are breathable and durable. For summer, lightweight sandals are suitable; in the transitional seasons opt for low shoes & ballerinas; and for winter choose warm boots. Rotating between different shoes promotes foot health and allows each pair to dry.

Care and sustainability

Clean sneakers regularly with a brush and mild cleaner. Protect leather shoes with waterproofing spray. Air out shoes after wearing. When buying, look for quality brands that produce fairly and use sustainable materials. Well‑kept shoes can be passed on or recycled. This supports the environment and ensures healthy feet.

Styling and combinations

Sneakers are versatile – they go with jeans, dresses, skirts or shorts. Cheerful colours and patterns such as rainbows or glitter add a good mood on the playground. For festive occasions there are simple models in neutral tones that also match a dress. Laces, Velcro or slip‑ons make it easy to put them on. Add coloured socks or leggings to create an individual look.

Activities and sports

Children’s sneakers are suitable not only for everyday wear but also for sports. When running, climbing and jumping they provide good grip and protect against injury. For school sports there are special indoor shoes with non‑marking soles. After sports, air the shoes thoroughly and let them dry. Replace shoes in time when they become too small or the sole is worn out.

Sneakers can be personalised with patches or colourful laces. Small holes can often be repaired, extending the life of the shoes.

Opt for models with removable insoles that can be washed or replaced for better hygiene.

Lightweight soles encourage natural movement and help toddlers develop a confident gait.
