Vocabulary

*Vocabulary* is a clever, playful, and wonderfully surprising picture book about the magic of language. When Oscar finds a treasure chest, he expects gold, gemstones, or sparkling treasures. But inside the chest are words. At first, Oscar is disappointed, until he realizes that words can do more than just sit quietly on paper. A carelessly tossed-aside “bright yellow” suddenly brings a yellow hedgehog to life, and the unassuming chest becomes a place full of imagination, wordplay, and possibilities. With subtle humor, Rebecca Gugger and Simon Röthlisberger show just how powerful, sensory, and vibrant language can be. At the same time, the picture book illustrates that words have an impact and should be chosen with care. The full-color illustrations throughout ingeniously combine images, graphics, and text, inviting children to marvel, tell stories, and use their imagination.

An inspiring book for children ages 4 and up—for families, daycare centers, preschools, and schools—that fosters a love of language, vocabulary, creativity, and early language awareness.
