Sustainable consumption in Switzerland

Sustainable consumption is not only needed in the fashion industry, but should be practiced by us every day when choosing our food. Shopping regionally and seasonally can be quite difficult when there is so much on offer in the supermarket. That's why it's all the more important to question where the food in the store comes from and how far it has traveled. This raises the question of what impact does a long transportation route have on sustainability? And how relevant is the consumption of regional or national products? And when does transportation play no role?

In the case of food, the method of cultivation plays a major role in terms of environmental impact or its avoidance. Pesticides used, soil cultivation, artificial climate production or animal feed in the case of meat are more important in the sustainability assessment than transportation. Nevertheless, it can generally be said that the shorter the distance a food product travels, the better. And as a rule of thumb: avoid food that is transported by plane and also consider your own shopping route and use it in an ecologically sensible way. We should also eat an 80% plant-based diet.

However, other aspects should not be ignored under any circumstances. Often more important than geographical distance is the structure and length of the value chain. Thanks to short food chains, direct relationships between consumers and producers allow for greater transparency, greater influence and, above all, mutual appreciation.

The company maintains this close relationship with producers Crowd Container and ensures sustainable agriculture. Together with currently twelve Swiss producers who practice climate-friendly agriculture that is also rich in species and varieties, Crowd Container has Crowd Container has put together an exciting range of valuable farm produce. To ensure that such careful cultivation is possible and worthwhile, we talk to the producers about it and set the product prices together.

Old grain varieties such as emmer or einkorn from the Bündnerland, pasta made from red wheat or plaited flour from Mönchaltorf, fine high-stem juices, spelt from biodynamic cultivation in Oberaargau or natural wines that are completely free from chemical substances: these are just a few examples from the Swiss collective order from Crowd Container.
